Stand Magnifier, 10X30 (10X mag / 30mm lens dia.)

Stand Magnifier, 10X30 (10X mag / 30mm lens dia.)

Ref: stand-10X30

{Summary}
10X magnification, 25mm diameter lens

To read an article about magnifiers and magnification click here

{Technical}
Magnification / lens size in mm: 10X25

Maximum working distance: n/a (it's closed in)

Origin / brand: we import these from China

Construction / presentation: plastic lens, plastic casing, supplied in a printed cardboard box.

{Applications / Quality}
Generally, these are high power (like loupes) but on stands so that you don't have to hold them. Since they stand (i.e. stand flat) they are intended for use on flat objects such as stamps and coins, prints, paintings and photographs, and fabrics. Some are on 'open' stands, so you could use very fine (VERY fine) tools underneath; most have 'closed' stands - see each photograph.

Specifically, large clear bottom half, to let in lots of light, nice to handle.

{Alternatives}
Not quite what you were looking for? You want a magnifier that rests on the page for reading? We have a few of these, especially designed for the partially-sighted, see our rest-on-page magnifiers

Too small? Need a stand magnifier that is larger, with space to work under? See our large stand magnifiers (bench magnifiers).

Not good enough?! Need a microscope? click here.

Almost right, but you DO need something considerably more powerful (a large single lens is ALWAYS low-power), AND it must still give stereo vision. Try the type of head-worn magnifier surgeons use. click here. These are good for watch repairing or for work on micro-circuits.

A linen tester (also known as a linen prover) is a folding magnifier, traditionally used for measuring the threads-per-inch on linen, which is why it has a scale marked around the base. Today, they are mostly used for viewing stamps, coins, prints and photos - anything flat. They come in all sizes from 15mm to 90mm, one even has a light.

Specifically, this one is very small, its 20mm diameter lens is about the size you would find on a jewellers loupe, obvioulsly it's not the best optical quality (for £2.00) but it's quite useable.

Double Folding Magnifier, 2 lenses combined = 10X

Double Folding Magnifier, 2 lenses combined = 10X

Ref: DB5

{Summary}
Large loupe / small folding magnifier. Two 30mm diameter lenses, each is 5X magnification, use them individually or fold them on top of each other = 10X magnification.

Slightly domed casing is very nice to hold.

If it looks familiar, this might be because it's a copy of an expensive Bausch & Lomb design.

Read all about magnification and how to choose a magnifier, click here.
There are also reviews of loupes, click here

{Technical}
Magnification / lens size in mm: 5X30 + 5X30 = 10X30

Lens material: plastic

Lens type: each magnifier is a single lens

Type: small folding magnifier

Origin / brand: we import these from China

Casing: plastic

Finish: black

Presentation / extras: printed cardboard box

{Applications / Quality}
Generally, loupes are used by jewellers and antiques traders for looking at very small marks; by horologists and engineers for inspecting very small parts; by stamp and coin dealers; as a basic field instrument for biologists and geologists.

Specifically, this loupe is suitable for those who want the 'flexibility' of more than one magnification without the expense of buying high quality jewellers' loupes. This is half way between a "general purpose folding magnifier" and a specialist "jewellers' loupe". For a simple lens, the optical quality is quite acceptable. You could even use it for reading VERY tiny print on food packaging.

{Alternatives}
Not sure? Try a larger folding magnifier, click here.
