Keyring torch

Keyring torch

Ref: torch-kl

The most powerful keyring torch I have found, yet measures only 16 X 23 X 6mm.

Last year I bought one of these in a shop in our local town (Watford), I paid £8.50.

Then I found that my supplier of magnifiers, in China, had these and so I bought a few.

OK, I confess: I bought a few thousand, hence my prices.

(You don't have to DO anything to get these prices, just order more and you will see that you have been charged less)

Please note, this gives out ordinary (white) light. For UV (ultra violet) lights click here.

Folding phone screen magnifier

Folding phone screen magnifier

Ref: fres-phone

{Summary}

A really neat vinyl case the size of a super-slim pocket book, yet it unfolds into a stand magnifier for resting a phone.

Why?

There are two reasons.

Firstly, photos on phones are very nice, but awfully small. The phone screen magnifier makes the photos look like printed enlargements (approx. 3X magnification).

Secondly, if you watch videos (e.g. YouTube) on a phone, holding it up level with your eye gives you sore arms. Similarly, try watching the same video while lying in bed, you prop the phone up, it keeps falling over.

The photographs show the phone with and without the magnifier, both photos were taken at the same distance, the magnifier really does make the picture look that much larger.

{Technical}
Magnification: about 3X

Size folded: 7½ X 4¾ X 1/8 inch (190 X 120 X 4mm)

Size open: 7½ X 4¾, X 4¾ tall (190 X 120 X 120mm)

Material: vinyl cover with plastic Fresnel (flat) lens.

Colour: black (to minimum of reflections).

Presentation: printed box.

The text on the box has also reads: "mirror material, organic glass" and "material function: anti-radiation". These descriptions are not necessarily accurate.

Weight: 150g

{Applications}
Designed for phones but it has many other uses.

For picture postcards and photographs (makes a standard 6X4 item look like 10X6)

For small tablets (up to the size of an iPod mini). And speaking of tablets, for packets of tablets (e.g. to read the dosage).

Other ideas: make your watch into a bedside clock; read the small print on instruction leaflets when you need both hands free to...follow the instructions.

With all of the above, the phone screen viewer tilts at just the right angle to view it without bending over. However, there's another way of using it. Turn it with the base flat on a table, the magnifier parallel with the table, now you can work under it, e.g. for crafts, repairs, calligraphy, or just for writing (if your sight is poor).

Magnifiers that clip to glasses - clip to spectacles, double, binocular stereo

Magnifiers that clip to glasses - clip to spectacles, double, binocular stereo

Ref: CLIPON-D

{Details}
Double magnifier, large lens fits over even large spectacles, can be folded up out of the way when not in use, carrying pouch included. One strength (the strongest): 4.00D (= 2X mag). Very simple design, very average quality lens, but very good price (leather pouch included).

This is too large to fit very small spectacles, I would recommend an ingenious single clip-on magnifier instead, click here.

5X15 by Gowlland (made in England)

5X15 by Gowlland (made in England)

Ref: 5X15-gowland-215

{Summary}

Loupe, 5X magnification, 15mm diameter lens, the very last 'made in England' loupes, long-since discontinued, we won't be seeing any of these again.

True, it is only 5X, but when I put these out at the exhibitions customers like them, the low power gives a very crisp image, good as a 'general purpose' magnifier, especially if you want something really small to fit in the pocket, and its plastic construction makes it very lightweight too.

Lens material: plastic

Lens type: doublet

Type: jewellers' loupe (small, pocket-size, folds into its plastic casing)

Origin / brand: manufactured in England

Casing: plastic

Presentation / extras: printed cardboard box

{Applications / Quality}
Generally, loupes are used by jewellers and antiques traders for looking at very small marks; by horologists and engineers for inspecting very small parts; by stamp and coin dealers; as a basic field instrument for biologists and geologists.

Specifically, this loupe is a good (and particularly crisp-image) quality for larger marks, e.g. on porcelain, silver and furniture, a good alternative to a larger folding pocket magnifier.

{Alternatives}

10X21 loupe, nice box, good bulk prices

10X21 loupe, nice box, good bulk prices

Ref: 10X21-crp

{Summary}
Loupe: 10X magnification, 21mm diameter lens. Comes in a really nice plastic box.

Possibly the most common 10X loupe on the internet, possibly the worst quality loupe of this size that I've seen, but gosh, just look at the price compared with the others! It impresses anyone who has never looked through loupe before.

Externally, what does this look like compared with loupes of the same lens size? Click on the picture then click on the picture of the selection of loupes - the lenses are all the same size (to within 1mm) but the casings and overall sizes are different.

Type: jewellers' loupe (small, pocket-size, folds into its metal casing)

Origin / brand: we import these from China

Casing: metal

Finish: chrome

Presentation / extras: fitted plastic presentation case

{Applications / Quality}
Generally, loupes are used by jewellers and antiques traders for looking at very small marks; by horologists and engineers for inspecting very small parts; by stamp and coin dealers; as a basic field instrument for biologists and geologists.

Specifically, this loupe is suitable for anyone who wants an impressive-looking jewellers' loupe of 10X magnification, at the 'bargain' price of £4.50. Many of our customers buy these per dozen and sell them in markets and boot sales, they look good, especially in their nice fitted box But please be aware that, at the end of the day, you are getting £4.50-worth of lenses, not quite the same quality as the 10X21 we sell for £27.50.

Hand Reader, large, adjustable, with four lights (lightmag)

Hand Reader, large, adjustable, with four lights (lightmag)

{Summary}
Magnifier with handle + four LED lights, adjustable handle, 2X magnification, lens size 80X80mm.

To download the instructions for this items click here.

To read an article about magnifiers and magnification click here

{Technical}
Magnification / lens size in mm: 2X 80X80

Field of view: Vertically: about 25 lines. Horizontally: about 1.5 newspaper columns, or most of a page of a paperback book.

Lens material: glass

Origin / brand: we import these from China

Presentation / extras: plain cardboard box

{Applications / Quality}
Generally, readers are for reading text. That includes books, magazines and newspapers; maps and plans. Also good for the 'small print' on forms or the ingredients on food packets - providing it's not TOO small (or your close sight isn't VERY bad).

Specifically, the lens can be tilted for the most comfortable reading angle. For instance, for reading a newspaper on a table will find it comfortable to rest your hand on the table and tilt the lens; for map reading in a car you would keep the lens straight. What is so clever about this magnifier is that the four lights (one on each corner) give an even illumination no matter how the lens is tilted.

{Alternatives}
Need something MUCH more powerful? Try a small (pocket-size) general purpose magnifier, click here. But please do remember that the more powerful the lens, the smaller the field of view, so these small (pocket-size) magnifiers will show only one or two words at a time.

Russian 5X50 hand magnifier

Russian 5X50 hand magnifier

Ref: 5X50

{Details}
Quite powerful, at 5X magnification (50mm diameter). Thick black plastic holding a chunky lump of glass, so you get quite high magnification and a nice chunky bit of glass for your money.

As regards the quality, please be aware that what you get for £5.00 isn't the same as what you get (for instance) with a Eschenbach hand reader at £48.00, click on the picture above, then see what text looks like through the Eschenbach (click here). to see the difference. HOWEVER, you really are getting a 5X magnification decent-size lens which, for £5.00, really is good value.

There's also a larger version of this magnifier, 7X55. Both sizes are pictured above.

Since they stand (i.e. stand flat) they are intended for use on flat objects such as stamps and coins, prints, paintings and photographs, and fabrics. Some are on 'open' stands, so you could use very fine (VERY fine) tools underneath; most have 'closed' stands - see each photograph.

Specifically, the bottom half of the stand is clear to let in light and...um...I can't think of anything else to say about this...it's OK, it works.

{Alternatives}
Not quite what you were looking for? You want a magnifier that rests on the page for reading? We have a few of these, especially designed for the partially-sighted, see our rest-on-page magnifiers

Too small? Need a stand magnifier that is larger, with space to work under? See our large stand magnifiers (bench magnifiers).

Not good enough?! Need a microscope? click here.

Almost right, but you DO need something considerably more powerful (a large single lens is ALWAYS low-power), AND it must still give stereo vision. Try the type of head-worn magnifier surgeons use. click here. These are good for watch repairing or for work on micro-circuits.

Double Folding Magnifier, 2 lenses combined = 10X

Double Folding Magnifier, 2 lenses combined = 10X

Ref: DB5

{Summary}
Large loupe / small folding magnifier. Two 30mm diameter lenses, each is 5X magnification, use them individually or fold them on top of each other = 10X magnification.

Slightly domed casing is very nice to hold.

If it looks familiar, this might be because it's a copy of an expensive Bausch & Lomb design.

Read all about magnification and how to choose a magnifier, click here.
There are also reviews of loupes, click here

{Technical}
Magnification / lens size in mm: 5X30 + 5X30 = 10X30

Lens material: plastic

Lens type: each magnifier is a single lens

Type: small folding magnifier

Origin / brand: we import these from China

Casing: plastic

Finish: black

Presentation / extras: printed cardboard box

{Applications / Quality}
Generally, loupes are used by jewellers and antiques traders for looking at very small marks; by horologists and engineers for inspecting very small parts; by stamp and coin dealers; as a basic field instrument for biologists and geologists.

Specifically, this loupe is suitable for those who want the 'flexibility' of more than one magnification without the expense of buying high quality jewellers' loupes. This is half way between a "general purpose folding magnifier" and a specialist "jewellers' loupe". For a simple lens, the optical quality is quite acceptable. You could even use it for reading VERY tiny print on food packaging.

Not sure? Try a larger folding magnifier, click here.

Postcard-Size Fresnel - 4 X5 inches (135X95mm)

Postcard-Size Fresnel - 4 X5 inches (135X95mm)

Ref: fres-pcd

{Summary}
About 2.5X magnification. 0.5mm thick (thin enough to be cut with a knife), postcard-size, about 4 X 5 inches (more precisely, 35 X 95mm).

The 'lenses' are cut into the plastic as micro-grooves (very clever), as invented by Augustin-Jean Fresnel (pronounced "Fren-nel") in about 1818, and originally used as the 'magnifiers' around the lights of lighthouses. To use a Fresnel magnifier you must hold it a few inches above the object, they do not work by resting on top of the object.

Read all about magnification and how to choose a magnifier, click here.

{Technical}
Magnification / lens size in mm: About 2.5X, credit-card-size.

Field of view: vertically, about a third of a page (of a paperback book); horizontally, nearly the width of a page (about two newspaper columns).

Lens material: plastic

Origin / brand: imported by us from China.

Presentation: it comes in its own clear plastic wallet.

{Applications / Quality}
Generally, these are flat (well, not 100% two-dimensional, but very thin), the thinnest can be cut with a modelling knife if you want to make it smaller; they can fit into credit card holder or be used as a book mark.

Specifically, small enough to slip into a bag or pocket or use as a bookmark. Can be cut with a knife, e.g. to fit over a sat-nav. or smartphone display (you'd have to make yourself a cardboard 'stand' to keep it at the right distance).

{Alternatives}
Conventional reading magnifiers with handles are better in optical quality click here. And small (pocket-size) general purpose folding magnifiers are more powerful. click here.

Bar Magnifier, small

Bar Magnifier, small

Ref: pen-mag

{Summary}
About 2X magnification. A cylinder of plastic, rest it on the page, slide it down. Total 6 inches, length of magnifier is 3.5 inches. Small enough to carry in a top pocket (it even has a clip) yet large enough to read the width of a newspaper column.

In the photograph the clip is blue. Some clips are blue, some are white - supplied as available.

Read all about magnification and how to choose a magnifier, click here.

{Technical}
Magnification / lens size in mm: 2X 80X10

Field of view: It rests exactly on the page and is almost flat, so the field of view is exactly 80mm X 10mm.

Lens material: plastic

Presentation: Plain cardboard box

Origin / brand: I bought these as a 'job lot' and haven't actually any idea where they originate, probably China...most items you see here in the U.K. are made in China.

{Applications / Quality}
Generally, these are for reading text on anything flat, e.g. a book, magazine or newspaper resting on a table; they are designed to rest on the page, to save you the effort of holding it above the text (which is very tiring if you're reading an entire book).

Specifically, handy to carry in your pocket at all times, just in case you have to read a menu while you are out, or the small print on a form.

Particularly good for dyslexics learning to read because it stops the eye from 'wandering'. Says 9-year-old Sarah, having been diagnosed dyslexic for five years now,
"It's really good. It helps me find the right line quicker" (she often jumps two or three lines when reading and frequently loses her place). "It makes everything bigger so I notice the full stops. It helps me read a lot better as because it's bigger I can see the words I'm reading and the punctuation really well. It helps me sound out the difficult words because the letters are bigger."

{Also Wholesale}
Availability: these are part of a one-off "job lot", once they are sold there are no more, see above for approximate quantity in stock today.

Snub-nose.

These are just 3 inches long. OK for occasional use, good if have a 'buying bag' of equipment and need to keep the bulk and weight.

They are use if you have exceptionally small hands. Some people like this size because they think small items of jewellery require tiny tools - that's not necessarily so, but these are very popular, they are by far the most popular at our exhibitions.

Despite being small, they are very nice quality.

{What Raffi Says}
The book started when I worked at a jewellery shop specialising in scrap and bullion. From the very first day, I started making lists and charts: details of how to calculate scrap prices quickly, lists of coins and medallions, notes about how I had mistaken non gold items for gold.

This new edition contains the latest hallmark charts (including international marks), reviews of gold testers, and the latest information about trading in secondhand goods, weights & measures, and selling on the internet. Also: how to clean silver using a simple chemical reaction; how to check a weighing machine; advice about handling testing acids; details of the best places to sell gold and how much money to expect; how to buy and sell for profit.

{Reviews}
A very useful and comprehensive reference tool for anyone involved in buying, selling or trading...
Marie Brennan, The Birmingham Assay Office

I think it's great that someone has picked up all those eclectic bits of information that have taken years to accrue and wrapped them into one small but perfectly formed package, it will save a lot of beginners a lot of time...covering what appears to be just about everything that is in this book.
Dave Merry, Head of Assay Office Training, The London Assay Office

A good reference, it answers the questions that an aspiring gold dealer would want to ask, very simple straight forward language...a must-buy for both the novice and the serious dealer.
Michael Bloomstein, Bullion Dealer

A really fascinating book. I am doing the JET 1 course and am using the book as a reference guide, I have read the book twice and have already used it in a few assignments. Very informative...brilliant!
Rebecca T. Student

A mine of useful information for the experienced or indeed the novice serious about dealing in precious metals...once I started reading this book I just could not put it down.
Michael Murphy, Baird & Co.

A must-read for all those who buy or sell gold or silver. The amount of information in this book is staggering, answers...all the questions you may have on buying Gold and Silver plus much more.
Cookson Precious Metals

I would describe this book as the Jeweller's Bible. All the information you need on testing and weighing gold...in an easily understood and detailed guide.
Bridget, Lynco

On one level this is a glorious picture book detailing the history of the fruit knife from the 1650s to the 1960s; on another level it is a guide for any collector or dealer showing the varying styles through the ages, including sponsors' marks, hallmarks and values.

So the next time you find 'an old penknife' or an 'interesting item of cutlery' check to see if it is an old fruit knife, and research its age, maker and value.

{Summary}
Jewellery Making for Profit

Author: James Hickling

Format: hardback, 175 pages

Edition: 1995

Retail price is £16.99. our price is £7.50

{Contents}
Workshop and equipment: polishing machine, rolling mill, grinder, drill press, guillotine, pinfold sizer, bench vice, fly press, lathe.

Materials: steel (hardening and tempering), copper (planishing, punching, engraving).

Speeding up production: (including machines you can buy, adapt or make yourself).

{Review}
This is not a 'learn to hand-make jewellery' book (which takes years to learn), neither does it expect you to spend several thousand pounds setting up a high-tech. workshop. Instead, it treads a fascinating middle ground: tools you can make or adapt yourself; how to make badges, brooches, bangles, rings etc by the hundred; how to produce small components by the thousand. It is full of invaluable advice for those who want to produce jewellery in quantity, whether to sell to friends or from a market stall or to local shops or even by mail.
