These are for removing the rims that hold the objective lenses of binoculars.

These rims have very fine slots, you can't use tweezers (you'll break the tips), you can't use watch back openers (the prongs are far too thick), you can't use pliers (they will slip, there will be an accident!).

I asked a binocular repairer what he uses and he said he makes his own opener for each type of binocular.

So I asked an engineer to make some. It turned out to be more complicated than a simple 'forked' piece of metal with fine tips - it requires a 'blade' (which won't slip) which is thin enough and which is made of hardened steel, and a sturdy casing with grips so that you can undo a tight thread.

MEDIUM SIZE. These will not fit every binocular, because the size and exact positioning of the slots vary, but the two large sizes (see picture) will, between them, fit most 50mm lenses. I've tried the smaller one on a random selection of stock including REL (Bausch & Lomb) 7X50, Zeiss 7X50 (I had a Binoctem, I think Jenoptem is the same), plus some modern binoculars (Zenith, Swift and Commodore) - it fits all of them. If you want to see if this fits your particular binocular, measure the diameter to the outermost point of the slots, the blade is 57mm long, so this won't fit if your measurement is less than 57mm.

LARGE SIZE. Some 50mm military binoculars have rims far outside the lens, If you want to see if this fits your particular binocular, measure the diameter to the outermost point of the slots, the blade is 59mm long, so this won't fit if your measurement is less than 59mm.

SMALL SIZE. I had this made for a Zeiss 20mm (e.g. 6X20, 8X20, 10X20). I noticed that the lens stood slightly proud of the rim, hence the slight curve in the middle of the blade to stop it scouring the middle of the lens. If you want to see if this fits your particular binocular, measure the diameter to the outermost point of the slots, the blade is 22.5mm long, so this won't fit if your measurement is less than 22.5mm.
