{Summary}

LEDs indicate diamond or not diamond; the diagram printed on the tester shows the actual size of diamonds so that you can easily see how to set the sensitivity before you carry out a test; this is the only tester I have been unable to fool in all conditions: I can't fool it when used in the cold and I can't fool it with my special selection of 'difficult' stones.

Can test small stones

PROS

This really is the only tester that will work in the cold, so if you frequent outdoor fairs and markets in Northern Europe in the winter, this is the one to choose.

Easy-to-understand scale to show you how to set the sensitivity.

CONS

This is a diamond-only tester, it will not test Moissanite, that means that a Moissanite will show up as 'diamond' on this tester.

CONCLUSION

As a reliable diamond-only tester, the DT-5 beats the others hands-down. It's certainly not the cheapest on the market, but if you want the flexibility to test cold stones, and you want reliability, then this is the model I would recommend.

{Extras}

If you are new to gemmology I recommend the book Gem Identification Made Easy. Not only is this a good guide to gemstones, it also has details of every gem tester, including hints, tips and advanced instructions. Not as detailed, but good guide to gemstones, beautifully illustrated, is Gemstones.

The most basic item of equipment for any jeweller (and especially for buying diamond jewellery) is a jewellers loupe. The best loupe (apart from Zeiss) is the QUICKTEST 10X20, £27.50. Even a beginner will be able to see if a stone is scratched on top and chipped all around the edges (or the edges are worn smooth) or if it is full of bubbles - it will not be diamond, you will not need a diamond tester!
