For loose stones (not stones mounted in jewellery).

THIS IS NOT A DIAMOND "TESTER" - you must be certain that it is a diamond you are testing. Then the VERITAS will help distinguish natural diamonds (from the ground) from synthetic diamonds (grown in laboratories). Both are genuine diamonds, they are so similar that it is extremely difficult to tell them apart. That is why you need a special tester such as a VERITAS.

This is not to be confused with distinguishing diamonds from non-diamonds - you need an ordinary diamond tester for that (typically from £20.00 to £200.00).

The VERITAS can also test for the most common simulant, Moissanite (Moissanite is not diamond, it is Moissanite). Apart from MOISSANITE it will not distinguish diamond from non-diamond.

If you are new to gemmology I recommend the book Gem Identification Made Easy. Not only is this a good guide to gemstones, it also has details of every gem tester, including hints, tips and advanced instructions.

Not as detailed, but good guide to gemstones, beautifully illustrated, is Gemstones.

The most basic item of equipment for any jeweller (and especially for buying diamond jewellery) is a jewellers loupe. The best loupe (apart from Zeiss) is the QUICKTEST 10X20. Even a beginner will be able to see if a stone is scratched on top and chipped all around the edges (or the edges are worn smooth) or if it is full of bubbles - it will not be diamond, you will not need a diamond tester!
