Summary
Weigh the item on the weighing machine (included).
Then weigh it again, but this time suspended in water.
Now find a calculator and do a simple calculation.
Note, you can test precious metals, you can test gemstones, but you cannot test both at the same time (i.e. jewellery set with stones).
Pros and cons
Cons: it's time-consuming, you must work slowly and carefully; it's best to carry out 3 or 4 tests and take an average reading; you must write down the readings and do some simple arithmetic with a calculator (we do also stock a computerised SG tester, £995.00 which calculates the answer for you).
Pros: you can test rare coins (which must not be filed or stained with acid); you can test gold fragments that are too small to test with acid or with electronic testers; you can test gemstones (a relatively easy way to distinguish diamond from Moissanite).
Size
The diameter of top of the basket is 30mm and the maximum depth of the basket is 15mm. The item can overlap the basket slightly providing it can be totally immersed in the water without touching the side of the beaker.
In practice, this means it will comfortably hold a stack of four pound coins (or 5 sovereigns) - or jewellery / gemstone / mineral of a similar size.
