Summary

5X55
5X magnification, 55mm lens diameter

Can be used as a handheld magnifier, but it is also designed so that it can rest on the page (more comfortable for prolonged reading). Very bright LED light.

Comments

By the German optical company Schweizer, absolutely top quality.

For the partially-sighted this is a medium-size illuminated magnifier, a good compromise between high magnification and (relatively) small size, and slightly lower magnification and (relatively) large size. Super-crisp vision, bright LED light.

Not only suitable for the partially-sighted (for general reading, this is particularly powerful) but also good for stamps and coins; prints, paintings and photos; textiles etc.

The photo of what you will see through the lens is a 'true' photo, it has not been enhanced (i.e. the text really does appear that large and that clear).

Technical

Magnification / lens size in mm: 5X55

Field of view* Vertically: about five lines. Horizontally: two to three words.

Overall size: 225mm X 65mm X 60mm

Light: LED

Lens material: Plastic

Origin / brand: from Schweizer, Germany

Presentation / extras: nice box
The magnifiers are brand new / mint condition, the boxes are a bit scuffed.

Power: three AA batteries (supplied)

Want a wider field of view? Try a lower magnification. Field of view and magnification are connected, that's the way handheld lenses work, there is no choice, it's a 'rule' of optics, the higher the magnification the narrower the field of view.

Price/availability

Why is the price is so low? (the retail price is £62.00).

Because we bought a 'job lot' of Schweizer magnifiers from a large company - they bought them from Schweizer (i.e. these ARE genuine!) then decided not to deal in optics.

We have less than 100 of these, once these have gone there will be no more!

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • how good is this for mole checks

If you're 'checking' large areas of skin, then your choice is good.

If you're checking individual moles, then a better one would be the 8X35 Schweizer model 144282

  • would this be able to grade coins using 5 times magnification, thanks

5X would be a good magnification for this. For the expert detecting difficult forgeries I’d recommend a good 10X loupe or, better, a low-power microscope. But for grading, 5X would be just right.
